As eleições presidenciais antecipadas de 7 de Fevereiro no Azerbaijão foram uma oportunidade para o Presidente Ilham Aliyev e o seu governo permitirem, pela primeira vez, eleições livres e justas. Em vez disso, tudo continuou como sempre, com manipulação e violações, incluindo votação em carrossel, preenchimento de votos e comportamento agressivo para com observadores independentes e jornalistas ao longo do dia.
Os resultados não foram surpreendentes, nem as comemorações na capital Baku. O titular obteve mais de 92 por cento dos votos gerais no momento em que esta história foi escrita.
In an interview with Voice of America, Azerbaijan Service, independent observer Nilufar Afandiyeva said once the voting started, she and other independent observers who were at the polling station were not allowed to move freely within the polling station and accused of interrupting the process. “When we tried to examine the ballots closer, we were threatened that we would be removed by the police. And this happened throughout the day. I was pushed aside by one of the state-appointed observers even though I was not blocking their view.”
Rza Abbaszadə, another independent observer, also complained of pressure: “I am an independent observer trying to ensure that the process is transparent. Once I noticed the irregularity, I was not even allowed to film the violation. If there are no problems [as commission representatives claim], then we should be able to film,” Abbaszade told Voice of America, Azerbaijan service in an interview.

Aliyev está no poder há 20 anos. A última vez que o país realizou eleições presidenciais foi em 2018, nas quais Aliyev foi reeleito para um mandato de sete anos (cortesia de um polémico referendo realizado em 2016, que prolongou o mandato presidencial de cinco para sete anos). Todos os principais partidos da oposição boicotaram as eleições em 2018, enquanto os observadores eleitorais locais e internacionais concluíram que as eleições não foram livres nem justas. Em 2009, como resultado de um referendo constitucional, o Azerbaijão eliminou os limites de mandato para o número de vezes que um funcionário em exercício pode servir.
Com a vitória em 7 de fevereiro, Aliyev cumprirá outro mandato de sete anos até 2031.
